Feather & Seed exists because too many "best bird feeder" lists are assembled from spec sheets, not from watching birds. Our goal is simple: recommend the feeder that will actually bring birds to your yard, and be honest about what won't.
How we evaluate a feeder
- What birds actually prefer. Perch style, port size, and food type matter more than a long feature list. We start from the bird's behavior, not the marketing copy.
- Durability and weather. A feeder lives outside. We weigh metal vs. plastic, how it holds seed dry, and whether it survives a season of rain, snow, and squirrels.
- Ease of cleaning. Dirty feeders spread disease among birds. A feeder that's a pain to clean is a feeder you'll eventually stop filling.
- Real cost of ownership. Seed waste is the hidden cost. A feeder that spills $10 of seed a month is more expensive than it looks.
Our honest status
We are a research-driven site building toward hands-on observation. Right now our guides are based on product research, specifications, owner feedback, and established birding guidance — not on multi-year field testing. As we physically test feeders, we mark each page with what we've observed. We will never write "we tested" where we haven't.
