Hummingbird feeders look like a solved problem — red plastic, sugar water, done. But the single biggest mistake people make with hummingbirds has nothing to do with the feeder's shape and everything to do with how hard it is to clean. A feeder you can't scrub easily becomes a mold factory, and hummingbirds will abandon a dirty feeder faster than you'd think.

What actually matters in a hummingbird feeder

Our picks

Best overall

Easy-clean basin feeder with red accents (Aspects / More Birds style)

Basin-style feeders (a shallow top reservoir rather than an inverted bottle) are the easiest to clean because the nectar sits in an open saucer you can wipe out in seconds. Look for a built-in ant moat and red feeding ports. The Aspects HummZinger is the benchmark here, and More Birds (Gardman) makes good budget versions.

Budget

Inverted-bottle feeder with removable base (Perky-Pet style)

The classic glass or plastic bottle feeder is fine — if the base twists off completely and the ports are accessible. Perky-Pet dominates this category and their budget models are genuinely serviceable. Just budget for more frequent cleaning; bottle feeders trap residue where the bottle meets the base.

The nectar recipe that actually works

Skip the store-bought red liquid. Make your own: 1 part plain white sugar to 4 parts water, stirred until dissolved, no red dye. Bring to a quick boil to dissolve and briefly preserve it, cool, and fill. Change it every 2–3 days in hot weather (fermentation happens fast), every 4–5 days in cooler weather.

Placement and timing

Hummingbirds like a feeder in light shade (nectar stays fresh longer) near flowers, and they're territorial — if one bird chases others off, a second feeder out of sight of the first solves it. In most of North America, put feeders out a week or two before you expect the first migrants, and keep them up into early fall for southbound birds.

FAQ

Is red hummingbird nectar bad?

Red dye is unnecessary and best avoided — plain white sugar water in a red-trimmed feeder attracts hummingbirds equally well. The red belongs on the feeder, not in the water.

How often should I change hummingbird nectar?

Every 2–3 days in hot weather and 4–5 days in cool weather. Cloudy nectar or visible mold means it's already gone bad — clean the feeder thoroughly before refilling.

Why is my hummingbird feeder attracting ants?

Ants are drawn to the sugar. Use a feeder with a built-in ant moat (a small cup of water above the ports), or add an external ant moat between the hook and the feeder.
